Mayor Mamdani traveled to Albany for his first Tin Cup Day as mayor, testifying before state lawmakers at the 2026 Joint Legislative Budget Hearing. He revised the projected city budget deficit from $12 billion to $7 billion, citing higher-than-expected Wall Street income and $1 billion in identified efficiencies. Mamdani called on the state Legislature to authorize a 2% income tax on New Yorkers earning over $1 million and an increase in the corporate tax rate.

Mayor Mamdani nominated Nadia Shihata as Commissioner of the Department of Investigation. Shihata served more than 11 years as a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York and was a lead prosecutor in the R. Kelly racketeering trial. She would be the first woman of color to lead the agency if confirmed by the City Council.
